From our Founder

Donna Hyatt, Ed.D.

At the Oaks Center for Educational Advancement, we believe teaching is skilled human work, shaped by personal identity, and practiced through relationships. Who educators and students understand themselves to be matters deeply in how learning is experienced.

Under the Oaks is a curated space for examining that work with care, in conversation and collaboration with others engaged in it, through stories, reflections, and collaboration.

Teaching and learning require judgment, practice, growth, and mastery over time and across roles and contexts: mentors working with teachers, teachers working with students, and students learning to direct and support their own learning, and each other. We can develop understanding and capacity through self-awareness, reflection, listening, and lived experience, drawing on these to build mastery and to explore the tools and methods used to understand how identity, context, and relationships shape the human pursuits of teaching and learning.

Our work rests on sustained attention to how people learn, how they improve over time, and how educators can intentionally and professionally support that growth in themselves and others.

Learning Beyond the Moment

The Science of Teaching and Learning: Developing Your School Culture Based on Continuous Improvement

In education, we often hear about the “art” of teaching—the unique touch each educator brings to their craft. Equally critical, though, is the science of teaching: a systematic, data-driven approach to improving instruction and learning outcomes.

Why Are Teacher Induction Programs So Important?

Teacher induction programs aren't perfect, far from it, but supporting new teachers and the chance to reduce new teacher burnout is worth it.
